i was born a mouse
not much larger than a bean
i didn’t grow much larger
still the world at large did i see
my curiosity took me
from the prairie to the woods
until one day to the river’s edge
i stopped and stared and stood

what would this life be without a swim
is my reflection deep beyond this film
i’ve gotten what i need from close perspective
so i believe i’ll take a dive right in

i emerged a frog
with an olive tint of green
the web between my toes
propelled me through the water deep
i didn’t have my rodent’s nose
but my eyes through murkiness could see
and then one day i saw the sun
and rose, and stopped, and breathed

what would this life be without the sky
the kingdom of the moon and stars so high
i’ve gotten what i need from water’s mysteries
i think i’ll grow some wings and try to fly

i emerged a bird
and warm currents lifted me
to a place amongst the clouds
for the first time i could see
the whole fabric of the land
all the fields and woods i ran
and the river’s winding gleam
made me stop, and stare, and dream

what would this life be without a mind
to process all the scenes as they unwind
a factory of dreams, our thoughts are building blocks
that shape reality, and let us be
